COMPETITION RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. Organizers

The Fondazione Arturo Toscanini and the Festival Giuseppe Sinopoli of the Fondazione Taormina Arte announce the call for entries for the Ninth

International Conducting Competition“Arturo Toscanini”

Giuseppe Sinopoli Award

under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Italy with the sponsorship of the Ministry for Arts and Culture and the Emilia Romagna Region.

2. Nationality and age restrictions for applicants

The competition is open to all conductors of all nationalities born subsequent to October 16, 1975.

3. Application and admission

3.1 Application procedure

To request admission to the competition, each applicant must submit to the Fondazione Toscanini the enclosed entry form, fully compiled and signed, including the applicant's composition of choice as specified under section 6 of the Competition Rules and Regulations. The application form must be submitted to the Fondazione Toscanini Competition no later than June 15, 2010. By submission date is meant the date of the postmark affixed by national and international postal authorities, the date on the fax transmission receipt or the date of reception via electronic mail. The Fondazione Toscanini cannot be held responsible for any postal difficulties or errors or omissions arising from the negligence of others or mechanical failure. Applicants are advised to submit entry materials as early as possible and not wait until the entry expiration date. 

3.2 Application Form

The following documents must be included with the application form:

-          birth certificate;

-          photocopy of an official I.D. or passport;

-          three recent photographs in black-and-white (two passport-size and one postcard-size);

-          resumé that includes study and training and teachers;

-          documentation of artistic experience;

-          three letters of recommendation from teachers or individuals from the music world;

-          videocassette or DVD (preferred) lasting at least 30 min. showing the applicant conducting an orchestra or ensemble of at least ten performers.

The documents cited above will not be returned.

3.3 Competition address

The application form, completed either using a typewriter or by hand in all capital letters, must be sent along with the documents specified above by registered mail, fax or e-mail to the following address:

Application forms that do not contain all specified information will not be accepted.

3.4 Application Fee

Each applicant must submit via bank transfer an application fee of € 100 net of all fees and costs, to checking account IBAN Code IT81 L010 0512 7000 0000 0011 100 (BIC/SWIFT: BNLIITRR) in the name of the Fondazione Arturo Toscanini with the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro (seat of Parma, headquartered in Piazza Garibaldi 17/A, 43121 Parma). The name of the applicant making the payment and the phrase “Concorso Toscanini 2010” must appear on the bank payment receipt. The application fee must be paid no later than June 15, 2010, to avoid any previously-submitted application request being invalidated. The application fee shall not be refunded, either in-full or in-part, except as provided for in section 15 of the Competition Rules and Regulations. 

4. Jury and Jury President

4.1 The Jury

The competition's international jury, appointed jointly by the Fondazione Arturo Toscanini and the Festival Giuseppe Sinopoli of the Fondazione Taormina Arte will be presided over by Michail Jurowski. The jury shall be comprised of the president and four jurors of acknowledged renown, one of which will also have the role of acting president. In addition, there will be four alternate jurors without voting rights, except in the event of substitution.

4.2 Alternate jurors

The jury president or acting president may call upon one or more of the alternate jurors to be part of the jury in order to reach the numerical quota provided for in paragraph 4.1 in the event one or more official jurors cannot be present for reasons of force majeure. The decisions of the jury's president or acting president in this regard are final and unappealable. 

4.3 Duties of the President

The president or acting president shall ensure that the procedures established and approved for the functioning of the jury are followed and shall carry out any other act provided for in the Competition Rules and Regulations. 

4.4 Duties of the Jury

The jury shall perform all evaluations for which it is responsible in complete autonomy and shall set the rules for its functioning in conformity with the procedures and terms provided for in paragraphs 11 and 12 of the Competition Rules and Regulations.

4.5 Family and other relationships between jurors and competitors

Individuals who have family or other close relationships with one or more (permanent or alternate) jurors may not participate in the competition, on pain of invalidating the outcome of the competition. In corroboration, each juror shall make a specific declaration to this effect which shall be included in the official competition proceedings.

4.6 Meetings in Parma and convocation in Taormina

The jury will meet in Parma on October 5, 2010 for Stage 1 of the Competition and will be convened in Parma on October 13, 2010 for Stage 2.

 

5. Competition management and Orchestra

5.1 Management Committee

Management of the operational aspects of the competition shall be entrusted to a 2-person committee appointed jointly by the Fondazione Arturo Toscanini and the Festival Giuseppe Sinopoli of the Fondazione Taormina Arte.

5.2 Orchestra of the Competition

The sole orchestra of the competition shall be the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini.

6. Preliminary selection

6.1 Competitor selection 

Preliminary selection will be made by the artistic direction of the Fondazione Arturo Toscanini and the Festival Giuseppe Sinopoli of the Fondazione Taormina Arte. On the basis of the documentation presented with the application, they will select twelve competitors (plus four alternates in the event any of the twelve selected competitors decline) who will be admitted to the two stages of the competition. The evaluations and decisions taken during the preliminary selection process are final.

6.2 Notification of results 

All applicants shall be notified of the results of the preliminary selection no later than July 15, 2010. The notification document may be used by competitors admitted to subsequent phases of the competition to apply for an entry visa into Italy, if required.

6.3 Confirmation of acceptance 

Each competitor admitted to the competition must send confirmation of acceptance by telegram, fax or e-mail no later than July 31, 2010, to participate in the competition and be present in the successive stage of the competition on the days and according to the schedule specified in the notification document. Failure to confirm will invalidate the acceptance offer.

 

7. Competition stages and schedule

Following the preliminary selection, the competition will be divided into two stages which will take place in the following locations and dates:

Stage One

October 5th: Elimination stage with orchestra (with jury evaluation) – 3 candidates

October 6th: Elimination stage with orchestra (with jury evaluation) – 3 candidates

October 7th: Elimination stage with orchestra (with jury evaluation) – 2 candidates

October 8th: Elimination stage with orchestra (with jury evaluation) – 3 candidates

October 9th: Elimination stage with orchestra (with jury evaluation) – 1 candidate

Stage Two

October 11th: Orchestra rehearsal  (without evaluation) – 2 semi-finalists

October 12th: Orchestra rehearsal  (without evaluation) – 2 semi-finalists

October 13th: Public semi-final concert with orchestra (with jury evaluation)

October 14th: Orchestra rehearsal (with jury evaluation)

October 15th : Orchestra rehearsal (with jury evaluation)

October 16th: Public final with orchestra (with jury evaluation)

8. Competitor accreditation

8.1 Presentation

Competitors admitted to each stage of the competition must present themselves at the competition offices (Fondazione Arturo Toscanini, Auditorium Paganini) on the days and at the times specified in the admission notification, bringing with them a valid ID.

8.2 Lateness

No lateness in relation to the set schedule will be tolerated, unless it is commensurate with normal competition activity and can be justified by motives recognized as valid by the jury; competitors who fail to comply face expulsion.

 

9. Expense reimbursement

9.1 Stage One 

The travel and room expenses (bed and breakfast) of each competitor admitted to Stage 1 will be paid directly by the Competition.

9.2 Stage Two

Full expenses for room and board will be paid directly by the Competition.

 

10. Stage 1 in Parma: October 5-9, 2010

10.1 Competitor attendance

Stage 1 will take place in Parma at the Paganini Auditorium and twelve competitors will take part in it. Those admitted to Stage 1 must present themselves in Parma at the place and time indicated in the notification document on October 4, 2010.

10.2 Competitor rehearsal order 

Unless otherwise dictated by the jury (whose decision is final), competitor rehearsal order during Stage 1 will be alphabetical, starting from the letter drawn at random.

10.3 Evaluation criteria 

Jury evaluation during Stage 1 will focus on each competitor's rehearsing and conducting over a maximum period of 1 hour 15 min. of two works (one chosen by the competitor and the other selected by the jury) from among the following:

  • LUDWIG Van BEETHOVEN          - Symphony no. 1 in C major Op. 21
  • FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN                 - Symphony no. 90 in C major,  Hob. I, 90
  • WOLFGANG A. MOZART             - Symphony n. 36 in C major K. 425 Linz 
  • SERGEI  PROKOFIEV                      - Symphony no.1 “Classical” in D major

 

11. Stage 2 in Parma: October 11-16, 2010

11.1 Competitor attendance

Stage 2 will take place in Parma and four competitors will take part in it. Those admitted to Stage 2 must present themselves at the place and time indicated in the notification document on October 11, 2010.

11.2 Orchestra rehearsals

Each of those admitted must conduct a 1 hour 30 min. orchestra rehearsal (without evaluation) during the period October 11-12, 2010. This rehearsal will take place in Parma at the Auditorium Paganini facilities.

11.3 Orchestra rehearsals and Semi-final 

The semi-final concert will take place in Taormina on October 13, 2010 at the Paganini Auditorium.

11.4 Competitor order 

Unless otherwise dictated by the jury (whose decision is final), competitor order for the semi-final will be alphabetical, starting from the letter drawn at random.

11.5 Evaluation criteria 

Jury evaluation during the semi-final with orchestra will focus on each competitor's conducting of one selected by the jury from the list given above in paragraph 10.4:

  • FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN                 - Symphony no. 90 in C major,  Hob. I, 90
  • WOLFGANG A. MOZART             - Symphony n. 36 in C major K. 425 Linz 
  • LUDWIG Van BEETHOVEN          - Symphony no. 1 in C major Op. 21
  • SERGEI  PROKOFIEV                      - Symphony no.1 “Classical” in D major

The jury's selection shall be communicated in writing to each competitor on October 9, 2010.

11.6 Final 

The final will take place in Parma on October 16, 2010 at the Paganini Auditorium and two competitors will take part in it.

11.7 Orchestra rehearsal 

Each competitor must conduct a 4 hour orchestra rehearsal (with jury evaluation). This rehearsal will take place in Paganini Auditorium, on October 14-15.

11.8 Competitor order

Competitor order in the final will be decided by the jury whose decision will be unappealable.

11.9 Evaluation criteria

Jury evaluation during the final concert with orchestra will focus on each competitor's conducting of one symphony selected by the jury from the list given below:

JOHANNES BRAHMS                     - Symphony n. 1 in C minor Op.68

JOHANNES BRAHMS                     - Symphony n. 2 in D major Op.73

 

12. Competitor evaluation criteria

12.1

Each time it is called upon to evaluate, the jury will give its opinion of each competitor in a single percentage score ranging from 0 to 100, calculated on the basis of the average of the percentage scores given by each member of the jury following the elimination of the single highest and lowest scores. In the event of a tie between one or more competitors, the jury will issue an overriding majority decision.

12.2

With the exception of during public performances, the jury has the unappealable right to interrupt any rehearsal at any time.

13. Awards

13.1 Announcing the winners

Winners will be announced at the conclusion of the public final concert in Parma.

13.2 Competition awards

The competition will assign the following awards:

First Prize (Giuseppe Sinopoli Prize) – € 20,000 and diploma of merit, as well as the opportunity to conduct a symphonic program which may be repeated during the 2010-2011 concert season of the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, a concert within the Sinopoli Festival and a third one for Fondazione Musica Insieme Stagione dei Concerti of Bologna. Other engagements to be announced.

Second Prize – €10,000 and diploma of merit.

13.3 Special Awards 

Special Audience Award – €5,000 and diploma of merit awarded to one of the four semi-finalists by the audience present in Parma on the evening of October 13, 2010. 

Special Orchestra Award – €5,000 and diploma of merit awarded to one of the four semi-finalists by the members of the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini. 

13. 4 Assigning the awards

The Special Awards are cumulative with the other awards.

The awards cannot be divided and are inclusive of all legislated taxes.

14. Recordings and audio-visual broadcasts

The Fondazione Toscanini, either on its own or through third parties, may make audio and video recordings as well as radio and television broadcasts of all the rehearsals in the competition stages, both in Parma and Taormina. By the very act of enrolling in the International Orchestral Conducting Competition “Arturo Toscanini” - Sinopoli Award, each competitor cedes any rights that could ensue from it, including to third parties, for any use and any means of dissemination, without the competitor requesting any sort of compensation for the shooting, recording and audio-visual broadcast of his/her rehearsals and performances within the sphere of the Competition. 

15. Cancellation of the Competition

If for reasons of force majeure the Competition is unable to be held, the enrollments will be cancelled with the unappealable decision of its organizers. In this case, and in this case only, the registration fees paid by the competitors shall be reimbursed, minus banking fees.

16. Official languages and validity of the Competition Rules and Regulations

The Competition Rules and Regulations are officially published in two languages (Italian and English). Only the Italian version is legally binding.
